The Nigerian Navy has been requested to establish a Naval Secondary School in Akwa Ibom for the education of children and wards of Navy personnel in the state.

Governor Godswill O. Akpabio who made the call Wednesday when the Minister of State, Defence (Navy), Dr. (Mrs.) Olusola Bada, paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Uyo said Navy should consider establishing the school especially in Ikot Abasi where there is a Naval base.

Akpabio commended the Nigerian Navy for closing down illegal refineries in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States and stopping crude oil bunkering business, noting that there was a similitude between illegal oil bunkering and arms proliferation in the south-south region.

He pledged his administration`s readiness to co-operate with the Nigerian Navy in tackling security infractions in the Gulf of Guinea and Eastern flank of the country to keep the place safe.

The Governor used the occasion to laud the effort of the out-going Flag Officer and the in-coming Flag Officer of the Eastern Command of the Navy, saying the security operators in the state co-operated with his government in confronting security challenges.

While thanking President Goodluck Jonathan for approving the establishment of some military formations in the state to curb security challenges, Akpabio promised to look into the requests made by the minister.

The Minister of State, Defence, Dr. Bada, congratulated the Governor on his numerous achievements in the state particularly building Uyo, the state capital into an Eldorado.

Mrs. Bada who said she visited the state to acquaint herself with the problems and demands of the various Naval formations in their effort to combat renewed insurgence of militants and other criminals thanked the Governor for acquisition of land for Naval base and barracks in the state.

She also thanked the Governor for releasing 50 units of two-bedroom flat to Nigerian Navy for use as its administrative blocks and fencing the quarters for the officer in-charge.

The Minister who stressed the need for everybody to rise to the security challenge in the country to the readiness of Navy to assist in tackling insecurity in Akwa Ibom State and the Gulf of Guinea.

She appealed to the Governor to assist in the construction of a jetty in Ikot Abasi to enable Naval ship to come in  as well as called for the construction of administrative blocks in a land acquired by the state government for Naval base and barracks.
