IGP Rates AK High On Development
08 Jul 2010

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ogbonnaya Onovo has rated Akwa Ibom high on infrastructural development and cleanliness.

Mr. Onovo gave this indication recently in Uyo while addressing officers and men of the State Command of the Nigerian Police Force in the office of the State Commissioner of Police, Ikot Akpan Abia.

The Inspector-General who disclosed that he was in the state for a one-day working visit to among other things, assess the operations of the state's command, applauded the tremendous developmental strides in Akwa Ibom State since his last visit twenty years ago, and commended the Governor Godswill Akpabio-led administration for working assiduously to catapult the profile of the state.

He expressed appreciation to Governor Godswill Akpabio for the logistics support his government has given to the State Command of the Police Force towards combating crime in the state and reiterated that the Police will move from hamlet to hamlet to arrest all criminals terrorizing the people of the state.

Mr. Onovo said, he would also during his visit inspect the Command School at Ukana in Essien Udim, pay a courtesy call on the State Governor and a condolence visit to the bereaved family of late Sir Paul Inyang who was murdered recently at a church in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area by gun men.

The Police Boss condemned the criminal act of the gun men in strong terms, especially coming from a state like Akwa Ibom which had long been identified as a peaceful state in the Niger Delta and expressed the optimism that the Police will work round the clock to clamp down on the criminals.

He emphasized that contrary to opinions from certain quarters that the resurgence of crime in the state is due to poverty, he opined that the criminal activity in the state is politically-motivated as it is the case in other states of the Federation.

The Inspector-General then called on all to support the Nigerian Police Force in combating crime by volunteering necessary and useful information on suspected criminals in their neighbourhood and the state generally.

Highlight of the event attended by members of the State Executive Council was the inspection of a guard of honour mounted in honour of the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ogbonnna Onovo by officers and men of the State Command of the Nigerian Police Force at the command parade ground.
